How to Play Scrabble

The official rules to guide your word-crafting journey.

The Objective

The goal of Scrabble is to score the most points by creating words on the game board. Each letter has a point value, and players build upon each other's words crossword-style.

Your Turn

On your turn, you have three options:

  • Play a word: Place one or more tiles on the board to form a valid word. You must connect to at least one existing tile.
  • Exchange tiles: Discard one or more tiles from your rack and draw new ones from the tile bag. This ends your turn.
  • Pass: Forfeit your turn. If all players pass twice in a row, the game ends.

Scoring

Your score for a play is the sum of the values of all the letters in every new word you formed.

  • Premium Squares: Placing tiles on these squares multiplies their value. A Double Letter Square (DLS) doubles the letter's score, while a Double Word Square (DWS) doubles the score of the entire word.
  • Bingo: If you use all seven of your tiles in a single turn, you get a 50-point bonus!

Valid Words & Challenges

All words played must appear in the official tournament dictionary. If you think an opponent has played an invalid word, you can challenge it.

If the challenged word is invalid, the opponent loses their turn. If the word is valid, the challenger loses their next turn.

Ending the Game

The game ends when:

  • One player uses all of their tiles, and there are no more tiles left in the bag.
  • All players pass their turn twice consecutively.

At the end, the scores of any unplayed letters on each player's rack are deducted from their total score.
